GM Canada sold its first ten Cadillac XTS sedans in July 2012. Hyundai sold 12 Equus sedans during the same 31 days. GoodCarBadCar considers neither of those two cars competitors for the $236,100 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, or for its lesser brethren. That's not to say the XTS isn't a massive improvement on the DTS. Nor does it mean the Equus isn't a class act. But they both cost less than a Mercedes-Benz E550 4Matic.

So to the subject of the S-Class's true large luxury car rivals, none sold as frequently as the S-Class (and its CL-Class coupe sibling) in July. Audi A8 sales plunged year-over-year. BMW 7-Series sales dropped sharply. Lexus LS sales were up 83%. You'll want to put an exclamation point on the end of that percentage symbol. Until you realize that LS sales rose by only five units, that LS sales are down 40% this year, and that Lexus sold only five LS600hL hybrids in the first seven months of 2012. There's a new LS coming soon.

Lexus LX570 sales are also on the rise, to the extent that in this large SUV category, the Lexus is no longer a back-of-the-pack pretending contender. The LX outsold the Infiniti QX56 in July as a result of the QX's 46% year-over-year decline.

Be reminded that historical monthly and yearly sales results for all these vehicles can be accessed, free of charge, through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home. To what do these numbers refer? 58% of the BMWs sold in Canada in July 2012 were X models: X1, X3, X5, and X6. Mercedes-Benz sold 847 GLs, MLs, and GLKs, not to mention another 53 R-Class van-utes. Lincoln's MKX alone accounted for nearly two-thirds of that brand's volume. And so on.

We've changed things up a little bit for July with the Cadillac SRX and Lexus RX, two luxury crossovers which are rather popular in North America. There have been sound arguments made for the inclusion of the SRX with vehicles like the Lincoln MKX, Acura MDX, and Lexus RX. So have there been rational thoughts presented to GoodCarBadCar.net regarding the RX and potential competitors which include the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, and Cadillac SRX. So the SRX and RX are displayed in both tables.

Care ye just for the sales figures of one specific model? Historical monthly and yearly data for every vehicle currently sold in North America can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home. After the jump you'll find July 2012 and year-to-date luxury utility vehicle sales data. Vehicles below are sorted alphabetically. Vehicles are ranked by July 2012 volume alone in the accompanying charts, both of which you can click for a larger view.

July 2012 Truck Sales And Minivan Sales In Canada

2012 Toyota Sienna Super white
True story. A close acquaintance of mine had hoped to become the owner of a new minivan last month. Alas, the deal Honda had been offering her, one which would have upgraded her third-gen CR-V to the all-new CR-V with similar terms, was not extendable to the Honda Odyssey.
Canada July 2012 minivan sales chart

Thing was, she didn't want a Honda Odyssey. She hated the conspicuous sliding door track, in particular, but found the vehicle as a whole to be ugly. She even went so far as to ask me, "What happened to Honda?" She wanted a new Toyota Sienna. They don't look so mommyish. And, I reminded her, they come with great commercials.

But, her husband reminded her, how does one justify a minimum outlay of $28,120 for a Sienna LE when a Dodge Grand Caravan could be had for $19,995? Even if the Sienna was better, could anyone really say it was worth 41% more money?

Thing was, she didn't want a Grand Caravan. So they didn't buy anything. All the family which needed squeezing in during the month of August was instead squeezed inside a friend's minivan. They'll save their money for a Sienna, more likely than not. Or they'll listen to me and buy a Good 12-winning Chevrolet Suburban.

Kidding. OK, half-kidding.
Canada July 2012 truck sales chart
Pickup Truck Sales Chart

The real story here is that many, many, many hundreds or even thousands of people were faced with the same minivan-buying conundrum in July. And almost all of them acquired a new Dodge Grand Caravan. They maybe didn't want to drive the same vehicle as every other mom on the block - it's the fourth-best-selling vehicle in Canada - and they perhaps wanted a bit more interior refinement. But the Dodge is just so freaking cheap. 58% of the minivans sold in Canada in July were Grand Caravans. Some were probably more than $19,995. Probably.

Canadians faced with a truck-buying decision don't, in majority fashion, leave a new car dealership in a Ford F-150. However, no truck ever sells more frequently than the Ford F-Series. 38% of the truck market was F-Series-owned in July. Its closest rival was 3657 sales abaft in July 2012. Combined, GM's twins were 3124 sales behind.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for every minivan and truck currently on sale in Canada can be accessed, free of charge, through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home. You can click either of the two charts above for a larger view. There are important links to examine at the bottom of this post, after you peruse July 2012 and year-to-date sales figures for ten people carriers and 15 pickups.

July 2012 Commercial Van Sales In Canada

Old and new Mercedes-Benz Sprinters
56.3% of Canada's commercial/cargo/full-size people-carrying vehicle market in July 2012 was owned by FoMoCo. With E-Series sales rising 53% and the Transit Connect ranked as the second-best-selling vehicle in the segment, one almost wonders why other automakers participate.

And then one remembers that automobile manufacturers are in business to make money. Is it hard for Chrysler to develop the Ram Cargo Van? Er... no. It's a Dodge Grand Caravan, Canada's fourth-best-selling vehicle overall, with seats and rear glass removed. Ce n'est pas très difficile.

Before July, Ford hasn't encountered a year-over-year decline in Transit Connect sales since February. Judging popularity based on figures such as these would be a mistake. Orders for vans such as these can come in clumps from a small number of sources. Perhaps Canada Post wasn't interested in purchasing more in July. Perhaps they purchased extra in June. Who knows?

Who cares? Well, some people care. And it's for those people that this post was created. There's plenty more in Canada's July 2012 auto sales recap here on GoodCarBadCar. And there's more on these vans, too. Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for all seven of these commercial vans can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home or near the top right of this page.

July 2012 Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada

Fiat sold 240 500Cs - those are the convertible Cinquecentos - in Canada in July 2012. That meant more 500Cs were sold during those 31 days than there were Chevrolet Camaros; and by that we mean hardtop and convertible Camaros put together.

This doesn't necessarily mean Canadians have more interest in Italian poseur cars than American muscle cars. Ford Mustang sales are up 14% this year and fell only slightly to 570 in July 2012. However, it does point to the 500's success. Fiat sold another 525 metal-roofed 500s last month.

July was the Hyundai Veloster's second-best Canadian sales month since the wonky coupe-and-a-half went on sale a little less than a year ago. Only in June did Hyundai sell more Velosters, but the decline to July's 612 (a 9.1% drop) is similarly reflected by the overall new vehicle market's 12.6% decline. Veloster sales should remain strong with availability of the 201-horsepower Veloster Turbo. But one wonders how many true enthusiasts will go for the $25,999-$28,249 Hyundai when the Scion FR-S starts at $25,990. Scion sold 323 copies of the FR-S in July; Subaru another 67 copies of the $27,295-$29,295 BRZ.

The planet's favourite affordable roadster, which now starts at a disturbing $29,145 in Canada, has posted a 50% gain in 2012 so far. July sales of the Mazda MX-5 Miata jumped 58% over July 2011 totals. The MX-5 outsold the usually very popular Hyundai Genesis Coupe last month.

In the not-at-all-affordable sector, Porsche 911 sales slid 6% yet no other high-end sports car or GT sold more often. The BMW 6-Series trailed the Porsche by nine units. Porsche's Boxster outsold the Audi TT, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and BMW Z4 rather handily, as well.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for these vehicles can be accessed through the first dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats home. Yes, we know the Volkswagen Golf GTI isn't listed in the table below, nor can it be found in the accompanying chart (which you can click for a larger view), but that's not GoodCarBadCar's fault. Volkswagen Canada stopped releasing GTI sales figures and hasn't responded to our request to explain why or to reinstate GTI sales data. Complain to them on Twitter. After the jump, you will find detailed July 2012 and year-to-date sales numbers for a large number of sports cars and wannabe sports cars, nonetheless.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.
