June 2012 Commercial Van Sales In Canada

3484 commercial vans landed in the parking lots of plumbing companies, telecommunications providers, and truck rental companies across Canada in June 2012. Perspective? Dodge sold a record 6103 Grand Caravans in June.

June 2012 Small Luxury SUV Sales And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada

The Lexus RX was the best-selling luxury SUV or crossover in Canada in June 2012. Its half-year lead over the Mercedes-Benz M-Class is now at a tenuous 89 units. 12.4% of the RXs sold, or 86 in total, were RX450h hybrids. RX350 sales are up 0.3% this year; RX450h sales are down 7%.

Acura MDX sales fell 38% compared with a month ago when 625 were sold. Perhaps stock was killed off. Through six months, M-Class sales have just about doubled. Porsche Cayenne sales are down slightly this year but jumped 29% in June. Unfortunately, Porsche Canada stopped supplying their best-on-the-market model-by-model breakdown with June's results, so we don't know how many of the Cayennes sold were $122K Turbos.

There's amazing parity in the small luxury SUV class. The X1 is now a consistent class-leader, but it's not as though the little BMW is stealing a wild amount of sales from its chief rivals. Of the 3277 June sales recorded by the ten luxury utilities in the first table visible after the jump (and in the accompanying chart which you can click for a larger view), only 19% were BMW X1s. 17% were Acura RDXs. Another 17% belonged to the Mercedes-Benz GLK, 14% to the BMW X3, and 12% of the market was the Audi Q5's.

Nothing against the X1's ability to outsell its big brother and its big brother's rivals, we're just not going to call this dominance. The Dodge Grand Caravan owned 58% of the minivan market in June 2012.

Lexus Canada hasn't reported a double-digit sales month for their flagship LS sedan since December of last year. Lexus Canada hasn't sold more than 20 LS sedans in a single month since July 2010. The suggestion that LS sales are low because potential customers are waiting for the new model is faulty... unless customers have been waiting a long time. 

The BMW 7-Series, which wasn't even the class leader in June 2012, outsold the LS at a rate of 9-to-1. The historically recommendable but unpopular Audi A8 was nearly five times more likely than the Lexus to be purchased in June. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class? With its CL-Class coupe sibling, the Benz 2.9 times per day in June (including Sundays.) One LS sold every five days. Not a single LS600hL found a buyer.

Lexus's own jumbo-sized LX570 trails most of its classmates by a hefty margin, but even here the LS appears dreadfully unpopular. The LX570 sold four times for every LS. LX570 sales are improving, too, up 333% compared to June of last year. June 2012 was the LX's worst month since only four were sold in February.

June 2012 Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In Canada

A small monthly victory helped the BMW 3-Series claw back some of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class's year-to-date lead in June 2012. The 3-Series, despite a 23% slide last month, is now 647 units behind the C-Class, rather than 762 units back as it was a month ago.

Canadian sales of the Infiniti G and Cadillac CTS dipped severely in June 2012. The Lexus CT200h had been on sale for four months at this point last year and sales had dipped 87% from its peak of 221 units. Thus, any decent performance was going to result in a massive year-over-year increase this June. In the supply-constrained second quarter of 2011, Acura TSX sales had also taken a plunge, from 127 units in March 2011 to just 68 in June. What makes the TSX's increase this June more notable is the introduction of the Acura ILX, a Civic-based replacement for the Civic-based Acura CSX. Year-over-year, sales of the ILX/CSX fell 12.4%.

The ILX and TSX's bigger brother, the Acura TL, enjoyed a 36% June jump. Audi A6 sales rose dramatically, but did so from a low 25-unit total a year ago. Combined, Audi sold 139 A6 sedans and A7 hatchbacks last month. Lexus sold nine GS450h hybrids in June, up from zero a year ago. GS350 sales shot up 1057%. And the Hyundai Genesis, a car many see as a competitor for the Buick LaCrosse, Toyota Avalon, and Chrysler 300 (which itself might deserve to be grouped in this lot), doubled last year's volume in June and has done so in the first half of 2012, as well.

The best-selling midsize luxury cars in Canada are the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (and its CLS-Class sibling which M-B Canada unfortunately includes in the E's total) and its compatriot, the BMW 5-Series. Sales of both the Benz and BMW improved in June. June 2012 YTD Top 254 Best-Selling Vehicles In Canada - Every Vehicle Ranked

In the first six months of 2012 Canadians have purchased or leased 866,000 new automobiles. 15.5% of those new purchases have resulted in full-size trucks being driven home (or to the workplace); another 9.2% were either Canada's best-selling car, best-selling minivan, or best-selling SUV. 

Among Canada's four major segment-leading vehicles - which happen to be ranked first, third, fourth, and ninth in this list of 254 vehicles - only the Ford Escape is in a true battle to hold on to its long-held crown. The Honda CR-V is only 1004 units abaft. Ford's F-Series sells 1.5 times for every single sale of its chief truck rival, the Ram P/U. The Honda Civic's passenger car lead over the Hyundai Elantra is 6572-units strong. And the Dodge Grand Caravan owns 55% of the Canadian minivan market. The second-ranked minivan from Toyota, Canada's 38th-best-selling vehicle overall, does not completely own the other 45%.
