Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada - May 2012

Are Porsche Boxster sales finally about to improve? Since GCBC Towers was relocated to Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, its proximity to a major autoport made us witnesses to the unloading on Friday of countless Boxsters from the Neptune Ace. Porsche Canada sold three regular Boxsters in May 2012, two copies of the Boxster S, and one Boxster S Black Edition. Throw in another eight basic Caymans, five S-badged Caymans, two R-badged Caymans, and one Cayman Black Edition for a total of 22 sub-911 Porsche sports cars. Mercedes-Benz sold 75 SLK roadsters during the same period.

We've added the BMW 1-Series (also visible in the small/entry luxury car sales category) and Fiat 500C (also visible in the small cars category where it's combined with the hardtop 500) to May's Canadian sporty car sales chart. Whenever coupe or convertible sales figures are made available, the goal will be to include them here.

Unfortunately, Infinti Canada doesn't break down G37 sales by bodystyle like Infiniti does in the United States. And while we're keen to include cars like the Subaru Impreza WRX/STi, Subaru Canada doesn't separate WRX/STi sales from sales of the regular Impreza, either. However, sales figures for the 500C, Genesis Coupe, Lexus ISC, Lexus ISF are available in Canada, but not south of the border.

Back on the subject of Porsche, a ridiculous number of new 911s were acquired in Canada in May 2012. Last May was the best Canadian sales month for the 911 since April 2010. Yet one year later, 911 sales jumped by 35 units, or 46%, to 112.

Want to know more? The basic 911 sold 20 times. The 911 Carrera S ranked second with 28 sales. There was one Carrera Black Edition sold, 10 basic 911 Cabriolets, 29 Carrera S Cabriolets, two all-wheel drive basic 911s, two 911 Turbos, one 911 Carrera 4S, four copies of the 911 Turbo S, six copies of the Carrera 4 GTS, one basic Targa, one Targa 4S, one all-wheel drive Cabriolet, three all-wheel drive S-badged Cabriolets, one 911 Turbo Cabriolet, and two 911 Turbo S Cabriolets. That's 46 Cabriolets in all.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for every model currently on sale in North America can be accessed through the dropdown menu at the top right of this page or at GCBC's Sales Stats home. The May 2012 sales tables visible after the jump showcase the strength of the Ford Mustang, and at the low end, the Hyundai Veloster. Click either of the charts for a larger view.

Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we don't know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above.
