Nissan Maxima Sales Strong In America, Weak In Canada

2012 Nissan Maxima White
Through the first nine months of 2011, the Canadian auto market was 7.8 times smaller than the U.S. auto market. Nissan Maxima sales, however, are 26.4 times stronger in the United States.

Before that number shocks you more than it should, remember that Nissan sells 11.6 vehicles in the U.S. for every one vehicle Nissan sells in Canada, so the company's market share south of the border is much healthier. But, as mathematicians would readily understand, 11.6 does not equal 26.4.

What's the explanation? For starters, there's one basic assumption auto observers can hold when it comes to Canadian choices which don't jibe with the choices of American car buyers: a typical U.S. Altima buyer would be a Sentra buyer in Canada. The same goes for other automakers. Canadians pay more for cars and more for gas and therefore typically choose a smaller vehicle. The Maxima, being on the larger side, isn't really the typical Canadian's cup of automotive tea. As a result, not only is the Maxima rejected; so is the idea of buying a Nissan Maxima.

2012 Nissan Maxima Black Front End
There's much more to it than basic Canadian ideological car buying differences. Consider the Nissan Sentra, once again. In Canada, the Sentra's base price is $15,478. U.S. buyers would see a base price of $16,060. Now there will inevitably be trim and equipment differences, but there's no denying that Canadians can pay less for the car (before accounting for taxes and fees.)

Up one size class, however, the Altima's base price is $3588 lower in the United States. And when we make it to the Maxima, Canadians are paying $6130 extra. That's 19% more than an American would be forced to pay. Is it any wonder that Maxima sales in Canada are comparatively weak?

There's one other big problem for the $37,880 2012 Nissan Maxima in Canada. The less powerful but more dynamic and more prestigious 2012 Infiniti G25 starts at $36,390. In the United States, the $31,750 2012 Nissan Maxima can be slightly more comfortable competing against a 2012 Infiniti G25 which features a basic MSRP of $32,400. (The G37 starts at $36,200 in the U.S. The AWD G37x bases at $43,450 in Canada.)

2012 Infiniti G Sedan Front End
Maxima buyers in Canada are tasked with ignoring a cheaper Infiniti and a price that can't compete with a $36,700 Mercedes-Benz C250 or a $34,900 BMW 323i.

Is it any wonder that in America the Maxima is out-selling the Infiniti G family by 1210 sales through the first three quarters of 2009 (44,593 to 43,383) while in Canada Infiniti sells 1.6 G sedans and coupes for every Maxima sold? In America, where its base price is $3050 above the Nissan's, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is up on the Maxima by only 1535 sales. In Canada, where the Benz can be the less expensive car, Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales are four times stronger than Maxima sales this year.

Back on the main subject, just how weak are Canadian Maxima sales in comparison to what Nissan USA achieves? Nissan sold 6133 Maximas in America in September 2011. During the last eight years, Nissan Canada's best Maxima annual sales tally was in 2004 when they sold 5209. And sales had fallen 56.5% from that high to last year's year-end total.

The Maxima is by no means Nissan's only nameplate with vastly superior sales in the United States. So far this year, 370Z sales are 15 times stronger in the United States. No surprise there: Nissan Canada charges 30% more for a basic Z coupe. The Nissan Maxima's unique appeal in the United States simply stands out more than the Z's because of its mainstream volume.

Note: The Nissan Maxima is certainly not the only model with huge sales disparities between the U.S. and Canada. Significant market share differences usually exist in North America's large vehicle segments or in premium segments. The Maxima is simply the car chosen to highlight the fact that Canadian and U.S. buyers are very different.

Minivan Sales And Truck Sales In Canada - September 2011

2012 Kia Rondo Cargo Area
It has become too easy to be consistently amazed by the Dodge Grand Caravan's absolute domination of the Canadian minivan sector. 54% of all minivans sold in Canada in September 2011 were Grand Caravans. That's during a month in which Grand Caravan sales actually slid, though only by 18 units, a mere fraction of the Grand Caravan's total.

But again, we could go on and on about the champion month after month after month. It's not as though minivans form the most interesting subject to begin with, but after discussing the same amazing Grand Caravan feats each time this post is published, it gets even more tiresome. So consider the true minivans for a moment, the Mazda 5 and Kia Rondo. No longer on sale in the United States because of a lack of interest, the Rondo continues to sell in decent numbers in Canada even as it drives by its best before date.

Rondo sales fell by only four units in September but are down 7% through the first nine months of 2011. Kia has sold 5246 Rondos in Canada this year. That beats the Mazda 5 by 196 units. Mazda 5 sales slid 31% in September and are off by 18% this year. Both the Rondo and the Mazda 5 have a new rival from General Motors. Chevrolet sold 83 Orlandos in September, the Orlando's first month on sale.

Canada Truck Sales Chart September 2011
GoodCarBadCar.net already went into some detail on the ten most popular trucks from the chart above. What you didn't see in the list of best-selling trucks was the Cadillac Escalade EXT, sales of which rose 33% in September. Neither did you see the Chevrolet Colorado, sales of which tumbled 34% last month. GMC Canyon sales slid 35%. The defunct Dodge Dakota was down 84%. The Honda Ridgeline narrowly missed out on Canada's worst-selling vehicles list with a 66% decline.

Those trucks barely register on the chart above, buried in the shadow of Ford's F-Series pickup, a truck which registered a market share reading of 37.4% in September.

id America Gasket iPhone Case Review

head gasket inspiration for iPhone 4 case
id America iPhone Gasket Case
You can spend more than $29.99 on a case for your iPhone 4. You can also spend less. For the automotively-inclined who want a hard shell iPhone 4 case that doesn't look like every other case on every other iPhone 4, there's the id America Gasket Brushed Aluminum case.

Although the idea of a hard shell is off-putting to some iPhone owners, the Gasket case is very rigid once installed. Its fit is tight, so tight in fact that, while placing the Gasket case on the iPhone it's hard to avoid scratching the phone with the case. Again, it pays off once affixed, as its tight squeeze is much better than many cases I've tried.

My hand model had only one other complaint: the inner-circle edges on the back are harsh enough to feel like they're scratching the tips of your fingers. But the phone fortunately maintained its lightweight feel, something which can't be said of heavy duty rubber cases seen on the iPhones of contractors and accident prone phone drop junkies.

Six colours are available. Only the aluminum silver, titanium gray, and jet black make sense. It's hard enough to transfer the design theories of an engine's head gasket to the case for a modern mobile phone, let alone succeeding in such a mission when the head gasket is rally blue. Regardless of colour, it's unlikely that you'll slap your iPhone 4 down on the bar beside another just like it, and for that reason the id America Gasket Brushed Aluminum case is a winner.

What could make it even better? Fill in the holes, go glossy black, and simple place an image of a Ferrari 458 Italia's 4.5L V8 on the back.

Sporty Car Sales And Premium Sporty Car Sales In Canada - September 2011

2012 Honda Civic Front End
Hyundai Canada sold a whole bunch of Velosters in September. That's pretty easy to figure out after scanning The Good Car Guy's recent tweets and sneaking a glance at the really long blue line in the chart below. Moving on then, let's deal with not-so-obvious facts.

Audi A5 sales rose 5% in September. The TT was up 73%; that's 16 units greater than September 2010's Audi TT result. BMW reported a 25% improvement in Z4 sales; that's a three unit increase. The Porsche Boxster was up 200%; Cayman sales jumped 300%. That's an 18 unit improvement between the two of them. Mercedes-Benz SLK sales shot up 26%. Ooooh, that's six sales better than the SLK managed at this time last year. Not to mock, but year-over-year increases or decreases measured in terms of percentage changes can be slightly misleading in this class.

Volvo sold 12 C70s, one fewer than Volvo Canada sold in September 2010. Volkswagen finishes up the Europeans with a 16% drop in Eos sales and a four unit drop by the GTI. Mini and Fiat, by the way, are both displayed in the small car category.

Chevrolet Camaro sales jumped 50%. The Ford Mustang was down 29%. Most notable among the year-over-year decreases: Dodge's Challenger, down 66%, and the Honda CR-Z, down 57%. Both appeared on Canada's September worst-selling cars list.

September marked the first occasion this year in which the Porsche 911 was not the top seller in the premium sporty car segment. 911 sales were up 17% year-over-year, but the 6-Series' 650% year-over-year jump was enough to hand the victory to BMW. By three sales.

Nissan came close to scootching past the 911, as well. GT-R sales - wait a second, does the 530-hp GT-R scootch? - increased from 3 in September 2010 to 26 in September 2011, just one behind the usually unbeatable Porsche.

Small Luxury SUV Sales And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales In Canada - September 2011

2011 BMW X5 Brown
BMW sold 1426 utility vehicles in Canada in September 2011. That's up 122% from September 2010. The increase could easily (but incorrectly) be wholly attributed to the addition of another member of the SAV fleet, the new X1. But that would ignore the fact that BMW's three other utility vehicles posted significant year-over-year gains. One-third of those SAVs sales were made up by the company's $61,800-$98,300 X5, sales of which jumped 69% in September.

The X3 (up 38% last month) can be viewed in the chart at the bottom of this post. BMW's X6, not The Good Car Guy's favourite vehicle by any stretch of the imagination, was up 3%, or three units, in September. Year-to-date sales of the X6 are up 6% compared with the first three quarters of 2010.

Though much improved, the X5's sales volume doesn't match what Lexus can do with the $44,950-$59,700 RX350/RX450h. Despite sales which fell 14%, the RX still found 623 Canadian buyers in September. Leading the pack, Acura MDX sales shot up 40% to 733. Acura Canada is currently advertising 0.25% lease rates on 25-month leases and 25 months of complimentary maintenance on 2012 Acuras. The MDX starts at $52,690.

Back on the subject of Lexus, it's worth noting that much of the company's lost RX sales volume is not the fault of the regular RX350. The RX450h is down 39% this year, a decline of 324 units through nine months. In September, RX450h sales plunged 54%. The non-hybrid RX350 was down 7%, or 45 units.

Now return to the subject of BMW, September's top-ranked luxury brand. X3 sales were up 38%, as you already read, accounting for 12.5% of all BMW Canada volume. Between New Year's Day and the end of September the X3 was responsible for 15.1% of all BMW Canada sales. The X1 was BMW's most popular utility vehicle in September 2011, however. With 486 sales, the X1's share of Canada's BMW appetite was 17.2%. That made the X1, a vehicle not for sale in America, BMW Canada's second most popular model overall, though the 3-Series (down 40% in September) was more than twice as popular.

486 sales also made the X1 Canada's best-selling small luxury utility vehicle. (Some would say the RX belongs in this chart, and if it was included here, it would obviously be the victor.) Mercedes-Benz GLK sales slid 14% in September. The Audi Q5 was just two sales away from declaring a doubling of sales. 99% gains are nothing to be embarrassed about - the Q5 was up from 219 sales in September 2010 to 436 sales last month. Q5 sales are up 44% to 3553 year-to-date.

Large Luxury SUV Sales And Large Luxury Car Sales In Canada - September 2011

2011 Mercedes-Benz GL550 4Matic Iridium Silver
Mercedes-Benz Canada posted a huge increase in the sales of its largest SUVs in September 2011. To achieve a market share of 52% in its segment, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class (and G-Wagen) needed to double the volume achieved in September 2010. Indeed, sales jumped 108% year-over-year. For a change, we actually have the split on GL-Class/G-Class sales, something not normally provided for Canadian publication. 229 GL-Class SUVs were sold in September along with six of the classic G-Wagens.

Cadillac sold 46 regular-wheelbase Escalades, 15 long-wheelbase Escalade ESVs, and 16 Avalanche-based Escalade EXT SUVish pickups. Lincoln Navigator sales jumped 78% (21 units) in September. Sales of the Infiniti QX56 were up 186% from 14 in September 2010 to 40 last month.

This was Mercedes-Benz's month to shine, however. The GL-Class wasn't just the segment winner. It was more popular than all the mainstream large SUVs featured in this chart.

Canada's new car market declined - very slightly - in September. The biggest luxury sedans weren't all faced with such a downturn. Sales of Audi's A8 were level. BMW 7-Series sales improved at a 22% clip. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class and its CL-Class coupe sibling rose 13%. The Jaguar XJ was down by just a single unit, from 22 to 21. Porsche Panamera sales fell by two units.

Ah, but the Lexus LS. Struggling to find its way back after being hurt by crisis after crisis, the LS was down 44% in September. That works out to only seven fewer LSs sold this September than last. However, sales of the LS600hL hybrid fell from three to one and are off last year's pace by 59% through three quarters.

Small/Entry Luxury Car Sales And Midsize Luxury Car Sales In Canada - September 2011

2012 Acura TL Profile
Like its MDX utility vehicle counterpart, Acura's mainstream $39,490-$48,990 TL sedan enjoyed strong September 2011 sales in Canada. Acura Canada reported a 63% improvement in TL sales, making it more than twice as popular as the $42,150 Lexus ES350 (down 28%) and 54 units stronger than Mercedes-Benz's much more expensive E-Class/CLS-Class.

A big part of Acura's autumn sales resurgence is the company's 0.25% lease rate on 25-month leases, a deal which brings 25 months of complimentary maintenance along with it. Overall Acura sales rose 12% in September. Even the worst-selling RL reported huge gains, rising from zero sales in September of last year to four last month.

Elsewhere among Asian luxury manufacturers, sales of the soon-to-be-replaced worst-selling Lexus GS fell 67%. Lexus Canada sold one hybrid GS450h in September 2011. Lexus sold only one GS450h in September 2010, as well. Infiniti M sales were up 51% in September but are down 22% year-to-date. Sales of the Hyundai Genesis sedan shot up 129% in September - that's the Genesis sedan's best September yet - but sales are down 12% through the first three quarters of 2011.

Canada Small Luxury Car Sales Chart September 2011
Sales of BMW's 3-Series plunged 40% in September and are down 14% this year. The 3-Series was Canada's best-selling luxury car in September, nevertheless, and is more than 2000 sales ahead of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class through nine months. The 3-Series was responsible for 34.9% of all BMW Canada sales last month. In September 2010, the 3-Series accounted for 62.7% of BMW Canada's volume.

The new 3-Series has been revealed and GoodCarBadCar.net has images comparing the new F10 2013 3-Series with the outgoing car and a full 114-picture Gallery of the sixth-generation 3-Series.

So 3-Series sales were weak but strong in September. Its main European competition, the aforementioned C-Class Benz, reported a 38% year-over-year increase. Mercedes-Benz Canada is currently advertising finance rates for the C250 sedan at 1.9% over 60 months. The C250 coupe, on the other hand, is listed at 4.9% over 60 months.

Audi A4 sales slid 8% in September. The A3 hatchback was up 24%. Saab only sold three 9-3s during the 30 days of September. Volvo C30 sales dropped 15%. The S60 was up 103%. Separately, Volvo sold 13 S40 sedans and two V50 wagons. It's sad to see Volvo give up on these cars, sadder still that the gorgeous Volvo V60 isn't here. Yet?

Small SUV Sales, Midsize SUV Sales, Large SUV Sales In Canada - September 2011

2011 Kia Sportage SX Turbo Red
Mitsubishi began selling the RVR in Canada last September. Because there were only 13 sold in the ninth month of 2010, Mitsubishi's 646-unit sales performance last month brought about a seemingly amazing 4869% year-over-year increase. RVR sales were up 56% from August's 415-unit total.

Kia Sportage sales jumped 182%. Sales of Kia's larger utility vehicle, the Sorento, were up 80%. Hyundai reported a 67% increase in Tucson sales. Mazda even managed to find an improvement in Tribute sales as the company's soon-to-be-replaced Escape copy posted a 35% improvement.

On the flip side, the defunct Honda Element slid 78%. Suzuki reported a 55% drop in Grand Vitara sales. Hyundai's Santa Fe was down 40%. Sales of the Toyota RAV4 fell 38%. The Volkswagen Tiguan was down 36%.

In between the RVR, Sportage, Sorento, Tucson, Tribute, Element, Grand Vitara, Santa Fe, RAV4, and Tiguan are all the other utility vehicles in the first chart you'll scan below. Canada's best-selling small SUV is the Ford Escape. By some measure, the Escape is also Canada's best-selling SUV overall.

Scanning September 2011's auto sales data for similar information on midsize SUVs finds the Ford Explorer's 215% year-over-year increase to be peerless. Mitsubishi Endeavor sales jumped 132%, but that only works out to a 45-unit increase. Ford sold 642 more Explorers this September than last. Nissan Murano sales more than doubled from 287 to 595. The Subaru Tribeca's 62% jump was worth 18 extra sales.

On the negative side of the ledger, Nissan Xterra sales slid 82%, enough to land the off-roader on GoodCarBadCar.net's Worst-Selling Vehicles list. Ford Flex sales fell 46%. The Jeep Liberty was down 38% and Toyota's FJ Cruiser dropped 37%. Canada's overall new vehicle market was down by less than half a percentage point in September.

Canada Large SUV Sales Chart September 2011
You won't find that many new jumbo sport-utility vehicles were added to Canadian roads in September 2011. Three out of every four sold - there were 821 in total, including the Kia Borrego - were built by General Motors.

Chevrolet Tahoe sales jumped 116%. Ford Expedition sales jumped 265. The Chevrolet Suburban fell 24%. GMC Yukon and Yukon XL sales were up 8% and 14%, respectively. Kia Borrego sales slid 70%. Nissan Armada sales climbed by 15 units, or 39%. The Toyota Sequoia lost just over half its volume.

Small Car Sales, Midsize Car Sales, Large Car Sales In Canada - September 2011

2012 Honda Fit Sport
Canada's new vehicle market shrunk by 4% compared with August, but September 2011 sales of the Honda Civic were 54% stronger than August's 3073-unit performance. Admittedly, year-over-year, sales of the new 2012 Honda Civic tanked, down 21% from September 2010's 5972 sales. But there's something to be said for deals - previously unheard of ridiculously good deals - that had customers driving away from Honda dealerships in Si-trim Civics they'd leased for less than the cost of a mid-range Honda Fit.

Speaking of the Fit, year-over-year sales plunged 32%. From August, Fit sales dropped 25%. For every Fit sold in Canada last month, 18 Civics were sold. In the United States, Honda sold fewer than three Civics for every Fit.

Sales of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic began in Canada in the latter part of September. Of the 557 Chevrolet subcompacts sold last month only 55 were Sonics. Aveo sales were down 11% as its death neared. Compared to the Cobalt's 2875 September 2010 sales, Cruze sales were down 24%. Elsewhere among domestics, Ford Focus sales rose 41%, the Dodge Caliber was down 70%, and sales of the Fiat 500 (sold in Chrysler dealers) reached 508. The Fiat wasn't on sale at this point last year, but compared with August, sales of the Cinquecento slid 18%.

Sales of the crossoverish Toyota Venza nearly topped all rival sedans in September 2011. If only the Hyundai Sonata hadn't posted a 25% jump. Venza sales were up 10%. Sales of the Toyota Camry rose 58%. Canada's year-to-date midsize leader is the Ford Fusion, but September Fusion sales dipped 21%. Combined, the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger found 1291 buyers last month. The 200 was up 782% on the September totals of its predecessor, the Chrysler Sebring. Avenger sales shot up 535%.

Don't let the Camry's vastly improved sales volume fool you into believing all was well among Japan's most famous midsize nameplates. Nissan Altima sales fell 55%; the Honda Accord was down 31%. Through nine months the Accord is off 2010's pace by 32%.

Suzuki Kizashi sales were down 20%. The Subaru Legacy was down 13%. Outback sales improved by 25% for Subaru. If you're of the belief that the Toyota Venza and Subaru Outback should be compared with SUVs, check out this post.
Canada Large Car Sales Chart September 2011
Rarely are mainstream-badged large cars the story in Canada's monthly auto sales recap. September was no different from the norm. Although Chrysler 300 sales were booming (relative to 300 sales in the past), the 76% gains only took the big Chrysler up to 346 units. Dodge Charger sales were up 7% in September but are down 16% year-to-date. On that note, sales of the Chrysler 300 are down 38% through three quarters.

Ford Taurus sales tumbled 44% in September. The Buick LaCrosse was down, somewhat astonishingly, 60%. Sales of the defunct Lucerne dropped 24%. The less expensive Chevrolet Impala reported a 42% decline. Nissan Maxima sales plunged 49% last month. The Toyota Avalon was down 21% from 58 to 46. These simply aren't the cars Canadians want. Unless they're renting for the weekend. Still, let's be honest, they're probably going to choose a Ford Escape over a Dodge Charger.

Top 10 Worst-Selling Cars In Canada - September 2011

2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Silver
Vehicles completely lacking in sales don't normally make appearances on GoodCarBadCar.net's Worst Seller lists. Most manufacturers of hugely expensive cars don't release monthly sales stats for individual models. Lacking the context of cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia or Aston Martin DBS, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG's September 2011 shortcomings sounds worse than it was. Automotive News estimates that Ferrari sold 18 cars in September and Lamborghini sold six.

Canada's new vehicle market is small and somewhat limited in its desire for expensive cars. Ask the average Canadian how many $200,000 Mercedes-Benz supercars are sold in this country each month and their guess will be closer to zero than the 28 SLS AMGs Mercedes-Benz Canada sold in April. Year-over-year, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG sales disappeared in September, a full 100% decline, from 12 last year to zero this year. Ranked by the same standard - year-over-year percentage change - Canada's nine other worst-selling vehicles are in the first table below.

As always, vehicles not currently featured on their respective automaker's Canadian website, officially cancelled before the beginning of September, or out of production aren't eligible.

When non-premium/not-intended-to-be-exclusive vehicles are ranked by their monthly Canadian sales volume, some awfully small numbers are revealed. Not unexpectedly, the police-only Chevrolet Caprice found just two buyers in its first month of availability in Canada. Discount that car from the race and the Honda Insight is Canada's worst-selling car. Except, even the Insight has become a special-order car in Canada. The Kia Borrego and Nissan LEAF are also limited-production models, although the reason for that is because there's limited desirability.

But the Nissan Xterra? Sales of Nissan's off-roader slid 82% to just 28 in September 2011. The Honda CR-Z hybrid was down 57% to 30, absolutely crushed by the Hyundai Veloster's 568 sales. The CR-Z costs approximately $4500 more than the Veloster, is fitted with only two seats, and when equipped with a manual transmission, isn't as fuel efficient on the highway.

When all vehicles are taken into account, the $198,000 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is obviously labelled as the worst-selling car in Canada. Skipping the Chevrolet Caprice again, two Saabs stand out as the true losers. Despite the 9-5s handsome shape, Saab's homeland troubles are too much for dealers (and customers) to overcome.

Acura RL sales were actually vastly improved in September. During the equivalent period of last year, Acura Canada didn't sell a single RL sedan. This year there were four RL buyers. Lexus GS sales will surely pick up once the already-revealed fourth-generation car arrives. Lexus LX sales slid 38% in September. Toyota Canada sold more Land Cruisers than Lexus LX570s last month even though the Land Cruiser isn't a part of Toyota's official Canadian fleet. September sales of the Lexus LS fell 44%. The Porsche Boxster was up 200% last month; Porsche Cayman sales jumped 300% to 16.
